Selbst auf den kleinsten Seitenarmen ist noch viel Verkehr und man trifft auf die unterschiedlichsten Bootstypen, oft wird man von grimmigen Augen vertrieben, die den Schiffen auf den Bug gemalt sind. Typischerweise werden die kleinen Boote von Frauen im Stehen ueberkreuzrudernd angetrieben. Zwischendrin planschen immer wieder Kinder, die einem, sobald sie einen entdeckt haben, zurufen und froehlich winken. Frauen waschen auf langen Holzstegen hockend Waesche und Fischer stehen mit Netzen oder Einsenstaeben bewaffnet am flachen Flussrand und jagen im dichten Bewuchs oder ernten die Wasserpflanzen. Oft ist bis dicht an oder in den Fluss gebaut.
Die Armut vieler Menschen im Mekong-Delta wird spaetestens bei den Wohnverhaeltnissen sichtbar. Kleine Verschlaege aus Holzresten und Wellblech stehen schief auf Holzpfaehlen oder maroden Betonpfeilern und nicht selten dienen die Boote gleichermassen als Arbeitspaltz und Heim.
Die Hauptfluesse des Mekong-Delta dienen als Transportwege, auf dem viele Frachtschiffe den Reis, die Kokosnuesse, Mangos und Melonen, verschiedenes Gemuese und vieles mehr an unserer kleinen privaten Nuckelpille vorbeifahren und dabei Wellen von gefaehrlicher Groesse produzieren. Richtig gefaehrlich wird es erst, wenn eine japanische oder taiwanesische Speedboottour von hinten anrauscht, aber dann ist man gewarnt, denn keine 10 Minuten spaeter kommt das selbe Boot von vorne und hat all das schon gesehen was zu dem Zeitpunkt noch vor uns lag. Wir haben es genossen.Heute sind wir in das benachbarte 32 km und lediglich 2 Busstunden entfernte Vinh Long weiter gefahren, um, weils so schoen war, Morgen frueh noch einmal aufs Boot zu steigen. Danach machen wir uns auf den Weg nach Dalat, was in den Bergen gelegen ist.
